A Facebook Friend shared this video of Eddie Long being crowned a “king” on 01/29/12.
Summary: In a recent service on January 29th, 2012 Eddie Long, who is Bishop at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, invited Ralph Messer who claims to be a rabbi bringing Torah truth to Christians. This rabbi then proceeds to pronounce Eddie Long as [a] King in “God’s government”, lifting him up in his chair/throne and carrying him around the stage.
Click here for a newspaper blog about Long’s “crowning.” This blogger seems to view the incident as Jewish oriented. But what was Eddie Long’s “crowning” really all about? Was it a “Messianic Jewish” ceremony, or something else?
This article describes Eddie Long’s apology to the Jewish community after this incident. Here are some excerpts:
Bishop Eddie Long has apologized to the Anti-Defamation League over an incident in which he was wrapped in a Torah scroll and crowned “king”…
“The ceremony was not my suggestion, nor was it my intent, to participate in any ritual that is offensive in any manner to the Jewish community, or any group. Furthermore, I sincerely denounce any action that depicts me as a King, for I am merely just a servant of the Lord,” Long wrote in a letter… [emphasis mine; I am trying to locate the entire letter]
Interesting. Long says, “I sincerely denounce any action that depicts me as a King.” Yet in the video above I don’t see any sign of him trying to stop the “crowning” ceremony at any point. This, in spite of the fact that he is the pastor of the church, and a rather authoritative pastor at that. The fact remains – Long does teach a “king” heresy. Long is being two-faced in my opinion. He says in his apology that “I am merely just a servant of the Lord,” yet in reality he follows the Word of Faith teaching that he and all “Apostolic” Christians are “little gods” meant to “rule and reign” as kings.
Check out the following reader comment, from this forum:
When a king gives an order, he knows that it will be carried out. He doesn’t have to repeat himself over and over again. I just read that in [Kenneth] Hagin’s book The Believer’s Authority. This is totally shaking up my way of thinking about stuff. I have to remind myself that it is my privilege and duty as a member of the Body of Christ to RULE and REIGN as a priest-king, as Jesus did, in the order of Melchizedek. [emphasis mine]
The way I see it, the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church did not crown Long as THE king exalting himself as God, but as one of many Word of Faith “little gods”, one of many Apostolic “kings” who will rule and reign in the coming “reign of God” taught by the Kingdom Now movement.
Here’s a 2011 expose by LetUsReason.org of Eddie Long and the “king” heresy. The expose explains Long’s ties with the Pentecostal “Word of Faith” (WOF) movement.
And this article explains many of the heresies in the the WOF movement, including the “little gods” teaching. The article provides “little god” quotes from Copeland, Hagin, Hinn, etc. under the section dealing with WOF teachings on “Man.” The expose lists Eddie Long as well as many other WOF heretics.
It seems this all ties in with the dominionist Emergent/New Apostolic Reformation “Kingdom Now” heresy – that we are soon entering a Utopian millenial period (1,000 years?) under the “reign of God” before Christ physically returns. According to WOF teachings all Christians can view themselves as “little gods.” But Eddie Long and other “Apostolic” leaders seem to fancy themselves as the “little gods” who will “rule and reign” during the Millenium. This expose mentions Eddie Long, C. Peter Wagner, dominionism, the NAR, etc.
I was under the impression the merger of the WOF movement and Kingdom Now theology was brought about by C. Peter Wagner. I learned that Earl Paulk was the first major player in this merger – not Wagner. Following is an excerpt from David Cloud’s memo about the WOF/Kingdom Now merger (scroll about half way down the page for Bro. Cloud’s entire memo.). I have emphasized certain points by bolding, and inserted comments in [brackets]:
“The Cathedral at Chapel Hill near Atlanta, Georgia, founded by EARL PAULK, has been plagued with moral scandals and radical false teaching… Paulk amalgamated the Word-Faith doctrine with Reconstructionist or Dominion theology and promoted it widely among Pentecostals. As for the Word-Faith doctrine, Paulk echoes Kenneth Hagin and Kenneth Copeland and others when he wrote: “Just as dogs have puppies and cats have kittens, God has little gods. Until we comprehend that we are gods, and begin to act like little gods, we can’t manifest the Kingdom of God” (Paulk, Satan Unmasked, pp. 96, 97). Paulk merges this Kingdom Now Word-Faith theology (that Christians are little gods with the authority of Christ on earth) with the dominion doctrine [that] the churches are to unify and then retake the world from Satan and rule over it before Christ returns. He gives this teaching in books such as Satan Unmasked (1984), Held in the Heavens Until (1985), and Ultimate Kingdom (1986). Paulk wrote in his book The Wounded Body of Christ , “We need not wonder whether He [Jesus] will come back; HE CANNOT. Christ can only return when the people of God have reached that place of unity in which the Spirit and the Bride can say, ‘Come’” (p. 73)…
