Roma Downey’s comments about her New Age “Spiritual Psychology” degree show she is not a Christian as she claims, but a New Ager
In the Wikipedia article about Roma Downey I noticed this fact: “Roma graduated from the University of Santa Monica with a master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology.”
On a technical note, this blog says Downey “will graduate in June”; it was written Apr. 23, but doesn’t say what year. I looked back at several previous blogs – the Mar. 25 blog refers to “this Sunday, March 28.” Which would mean the Downey blog was written Apr. 23, 2010. So apparently Roma Downey graduated from USM in June 2010.
What exactly is “Spiritual Psychology”? Is it “New Age”? Bingo, you’re correct! I’m going to quote from several sources here, to explain Spiritual Psychology and Downey’s involvement.
This discernment article (which unfortunately says we should give “The Bible” a chance by watching it and discussing it with nonbelievers) nonetheless contains much helpful info on Downey. Such as:
I think, without question, [Della] Reese has had an influence over Downey’s view of God, and possibly that of Burnett, as well. However, even if she hasn’t [obviously she has, as I showed in another blog], Downey definitely has been exposed to the New Age having earned a degree in spiritual psychology from the University of Santa Monica (USM). (Charisma)
Lest one think this is a fully accredited four-year university with degrees in several schools; it is not. USM only offers an advance degree in “Spiritual Psycology”. If there is any question as to whether this is tied into New Age thought one only has to look to the founder of USM, Roger Delano Hinkins [I added this link-DM], who goes by the name, John-Roger. Hinkins, or John-Roger, is a prominent New Age author and teacher.
And here’s what I found about Spiritual Psychology at the Santa Monica Spiritual Psychology website:
“Spiritual Psychology is the study and practice of the art and science of human evolution in consciousness… “surrendering” and “sacrificing” is work that can and has been called “healing,” which includes healing on the physical, mental, and emotional levels in service to the deeper revelation of who we truly are as Loving, Peaceful, Compassionate, and Joyful beings. We refer to this level of awareness as the Authentic Self…
Put another way, Spiritual Psychology is a technology that empowers students to convert their everyday life experience into rungs on the ladder of Spiritual Evolution…
Change is taking place at an unprecedented pace on our planet… From within the Context of Spiritual Psychology, the only way to truly promote peace is for there to be more peaceful individuals living in the world.
… assuming we get through the current challenges, these very same skills will be highly valued as we transform into a more peaceful, highly globalized world.”
Regarding the University of Santa Monica, this Wikipedia article states, [founder Roger Delano Hinkins was joined by] “Dr. H. Ronald Hulnick and Dr. Mary R. Hulnick (former faculty members at New Mexico State University), who shortly thereafter took on the roles and responsibilities as President and Academic Vice President, respectively.” And in Google’s “Book” section, I found this book: Loyalty to Your Soul: The Heart of Spiritual Psychology, by H. Ronald Hulnick, Ph.D., Mary R. Hulnick, Neale Donald Walsch. The New Age Roma Downey provides this glowing endorsement (viewable online) near the beginning of the book as follows:
“As a USM [University of Santa Monica] graduate, I know firsthand the value I received from participating with Ron and Mary in the Master’s degree Program in Spiritual Psychology. I am so grateful to have Loyalty to Your Soul to sweetly remind me of all I have learned. Let’s just say that I went from playing an angel on TV to living more of an angelic life every day. The teachings in this beautiful book have sent me on a journey to the very center of my own being where, wrapped in the safe wings of Love, I feel as though I have come home.”
For more info on the above book on Spiritual Psychology, see the book’s home page here.
Finally, a quote from this source:
“Roma also attends the University of Santa Monica, a private graduate school founded by New Age spiritual and self-help guru John-Roger, and will graduate with a master’s degree in spiritual psychology in June [2010].
‘As someone who has been on a spiritual journey for many years [so basically Downey admits she has been a New Ager for many years – notice she doesn’t say here she’s been “a Christian” for many years], it seems a natural extension of that work,’ says the lady still seen in Hallmark Channel reruns as angel Monica. She notes, ‘The skills I’m learning will ultimately qualify me to be a therapist’ — not that she has plans to start a practice anytime soon. ‘It’s really so interesting to learn about human behavior.’
And other matters.
Says Roma, who lives in Malibu, ‘My kids go to school about a 40-minute drive away. I’m open to the group’s opinion about what we listen to on the way there. On the way back, I get my own selections — books on tape by Eckhart Tolle, Tony Robbins…My husband says I’m so self-realized I’m practically levitating.’
And Downey, a Spiritual Psychology major who listens to Eckhart Tolle and “practically levitates”, is co-producing “The Bible”? This is pretty heretical – not to mention all her other New Age statements quoted in my other blogs.
This article by Kate Nesbitt gives a New Age definition of Spiritual Psychology. Note that 1) the writer graduated from the same school as Roma Downey. And 2) Downey has stated elsewhere recently that she hopes to become a “therapist” (similar to Kate Nesbitt, I assume).
Sooo… when did Downey supposedly become a Christian? Before or after getting a Master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology? And perhaps Downey received this degree near the same time she was “contemplating” a production of “The Bible”. Sounds to me like Downey is claiming to be a “Christian” in the same way Oprah Winfrey is claiming to be a “Christian.” It would be interesting to see Downey go on an Oprah show as a guest. Wouldn’t that be a hoot, seeing one famous New Ager who insists she’s a Christian talk with another famous New Ager who insists she’s a Christian.
Would Christians like “The Bible” if it were produced by Winfrey, or Shirley MacLaine, or Deepak Chopra? Seems to me like Roma Downey is just as bad.

I am currently in the process of adding more info to this blog – keep checking back. And thank you for your patience. New info on Roma Downey and hubby Mark Burnett is coming out almost daily – it’s hard to keep up with!

I listened to an interview on a Christian radio show yesterday. KKLA Frank Montag with Roma Downey. She said that Jesus Christ is her savior.
Roma said she was so happy that all these different faiths came together to make this happen.
What is so upsetting to me is when people like her claim Jesus while doing things totally contrary – but people will believe she’s a Christian!!!
The deceived say – “Oh, but she gives glory to Jesus!!” and ignore the Eckhart Tolle/new age leanings. It’s so bizarre – it’s like people are in some kind of a trance or something. They can’t see there’s a problem there.
Everything is meshing together. The emergents/seeker/word faith/new age/Christianity/Catholicism . . .
A new age friend of mine told me that I can keep my belief in Jesus, just add the channeling, Reki, crystals . . . . .
Great comments, Barbara. I agree 100% with your evaluation of the situation. God bless you! – Dave
I agree also, very wise and discerning comments, although I hesitate to call the non-christians I know evenly closely, friends or family anymore. I know Jesus is our best Friend, and we believers are family, those who do God’s will. Are there many real Christians around? It doesn’t look like it anymore.
Many of the heads of most of the ‘supposed’ Christian Churches and false religions have now joined hands with the Pope, in ecumenical prayer and the coming ‘One world religion’ ruled by the Pope. His One world religion denies Jesus is the only Way, and says there are many ways to God, even by doing good works such as giving to the poor. As we know the only Way is through faith in Jesus, not in other religions and not by works. The Pope’s teachings are just like New Age, saying that we must join hands with unbelievers and tolerate or accept them and their evil religions. We are not to speak the truth to or offend them, no matter how much they offend God and us His followers!
It is sad that I do not know where to go to Church with my children anymore to praise God, plus have communion and fellowship. All the Churches I know do not seem to keep to the Bible anymore.
Great comments, Christine. I agree, it’s nearly impossible in many areas to find a church that is still biblically sound. My wife and I also are seeking a biblically sound church we like. We’ll be praying for you in your search.
Personally, of all churches which still claim to be born again, I would rule out:
1) all churches which are New Evangelical or postmodern (Emerging/Emergent)
and
2) all churches which use Bible versions other than the KJV (and its source documents the Textus Receptus New Testament and Masoretic Old Testament)
This leaves very few choices, unfortunately. Thank the Lord we have the Internet and still have religious freedom to communicate.
God bless you – Dave
Thank you Dave, Christine. Christine, yes I agree, the Pope and the new agers are the same. And I wonder if there are any true bible believers anymore. I love God’s word and want to obey Him. If you talk about obeying Jesus and growing to become a mature Christian and become more like Christ (as it calls us to do in the bible), it’s very strange – people say no, God accepts you as you are, and I have been called a legalist, Pharisee, critical, etc.
The new age movement/worldliness has infiltrated the church and no one questions it because no one seems to seek God through his Word. They seek God through people. People tell them what they want to hear – that it’s all about you. Very man-centered. And what is the new age movement but self-actualization, self-realization, self, self, self. The gospel is an offense nowadays. And pastors do not want to offend anyone.
What was interesting to me not too long ago – Frank Montag from KKLA who I mentioned above had Roma on his show – recently he came out about how he was in the new age movement and how he came out of it. I even received a magazine from the radio station with his story in it.
And I thought, how could he not see or neglect to research Roma Downey and her new age beliefs? There is a lot of contradicting going on. That’s not the first time I’ve seen people ‘warn’ against the new age movement but then promote it when they turn around.
People seem to say, “All you have to do is believe”, and then accept every false doctrine that comes along.
Yes, it’s very lonely at times adhering to God’s Word. Where can I find a real bible teaching church anymore? It is heartbreaking at times.
Great comments, Barbara. As far as your comment at the end about difficulty finding a real Bible believing church: there are some out there depending on where you live. If none are nearby, you can always find biblically sound individuals on the Internet. Granted, it is far from the ideal of attending a physical fellowship of Christians.
God bless you – Dave
Roger Henkins, founder of USM and the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA) had a near death experience in 1968 being in a coma for 9 days after kidney stone surgery. He then visited two trance-channelers where he claimed to have met a “higher conciousness” named “John” within himself. He changed his name to John-Roger which he has been referred to by all of his followers, including Roma Downey.
Thanks for the additional details, Steven. Can you provide the source for this info? I would like to read the entire article if possible – it might have some additional info I can use. God bless you – Dave
Sorry the last name is Hinkins (not Henkins), full name Roger Delano Hinkins, now referred using his dual spirit guide name “John-Roger”. His turning point was in 1963 when had had the kidney stone surgery (sorry 1968 is incorrect) You can read about him here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movement_of_Spiritual_Inner_Awareness and the MSIA here http://www.msia.org/john-roger and here http://www.msia.org/history
People this is very serious information that we as spirit filled blood bought saints need to heed and warn others about that Dave is exposing here. Its much deeper than what we see on the surface. I would like to quote a series of verses:
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here [is] Christ, or there; believe [it] not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, [he is] in the secret chambers; believe [it] not. Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
While Roma Downey and her husband do acknowledge the names “Jesus” and the “Christ” (which the demons also do according to Mark 1:24, Acts 19:15, and James 2:19) it is not the spotless Lamb of God, the Jesus of the Holy Inspired Word of God who shed his precious blood on the Cross of Calvary (where repentant sinners find themselves being broken over their sin and in need of a Savior), this Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, where all knowledge, power, and wisdom originates and exists (Col 2:2-3). Roma and her husband do not belong to God, they do not have the Spirit of God and are not born again and therefore do not have “the full assurance of understanding the true acknowledgment of the mystery of God, and of the Father and Christ” because it is a false christ which they preach, a christ of human conciousness and evolution that John-Roger preaches through his demonic agents at the University of Santa Monica which he founded. Here is the Jesus of Roma Downey understands and preaches according to the teachings of John-Rogers:
“Jesus Christ is the ultimate head of the Movement of Inner Spiritual Awareness on this planet. Jesus embodies the Mystical Traveler Consciousness and holds the office of Christ for the earth (roughly like the ‘presidency’ of this planet).” John-Rogers, Founder of MSIA and SMU
This directly denies the deity of Jesus Christ and that God appeared to us in the flesh and is therefore anti-christ according to 1st John. 2 and 4. and Col. 2:9:
“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
One has got to wonder if Roma Downey was already following John-Roger prior to attending USM in her esoteric astral projection paths while being the angel “Monica” in those touched by an angel TV series. The reason I say this is because of the following:
Astral projection in the early 1970s was what channeling was to become for the late eighties and, more recently, what angels are for the mid nineties–a popular fad that almost everyone in the metaphysical subculture had some interest in. While J-R often discussed astral plane experiences, he was also careful to emphasize that MSIA’s goal was soul transcendence, NOT astral travel. Nevertheless, it is easy to see how the widespread interest in astral projection was the basis for initially bringing certain seekers into contact with John-Roger’s teachings. To cite a relevant passage from an early MSIA book, Inner Worlds of Meditation:
“One of the first indicators that you have tapped into the astral consciousness within is that the imagination becomes very fertile. . . . Continuing within, you may start seeing lights–circular lights, triangular lights, square lights, colored lights–and this is all saying that you are moving further within. . . . You may start to see some beautiful, fantastic shapes and designs. If you watch carefully, you will start to see whole scenes appear within the inner vision. It might appear that you’re back in King Arthur’s court, at his round table. Just observe; it could be one of your past incarnations reflecting through the astral realm. ”
Roma Downey and her husband started the making of the “Bible” miniseries in 2009, exactly part way through her attending USM. This “Christ” she believes in who supposedly mastered one of the highest levels of human conciousness is the same false christ that Eckhart Tolle believes in along with many many others who claim they have been illuminated by the new shift and awakening of the “christ conciousness” which all humans apparently posses but have yet to tap into.
I encourage all you fellow brothers and sisters in Christ in these spiritually perilous times in keeping yourselves spotless and blameless (unpolluted) in this crooked and perverse generation to consider what the apostle John says:
“For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ (God) is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into [your] house, neither bid him God speed; For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”
As believers we not to verbally or otherwise affirm, rejoice, be glad, stand along side, join with, greet, hail, salute (as in hello good friend), fellowship with, eat with, or let into your house (which are all forms of bidding God speed or “chairo” in the greek) with those who bring any other doctrine besides the pure doctrine of Christ. All who bid Roma Downey and her husband God speed (as we have seen so many evangelicals and charismatics recently do) become partakers in their evil deeds of spreading a false christ through their twisted Gospel-less hollywood pagan produced miniseries. In defense of the pure Gospel and true doctrine of Christ we must stand firm with Paul and not be swayed or moved concerning those who preach another Jesus and a false gospel (Galations 1:8).
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” 1 John 4:1

Some other noteworthy endorsements:
We are in the midst of a New Evangelization; and I believe this book is a signal moment in its success. An Education for the Future
“USM walks the talk. To find a grad school that teaches, in practical ways, how to live life the way it was intended to be lived—loving your Self, loving others, and demonstrating success in the world—fills me with hope. And, as a bonus, you earn a degree while doing it! I wholeheartedly recommend USM for anyone who is interested in creating the life they were meant to live. USM knows and teaches what a true education is about—life.”

Now this is not the only connection of Bernie Siegel to Rick Warren:
Did you know that Rick Warren promoted Bernie Siegel in his Purpose Driven Life book, who believed in spirit guides and putting people into a trance?

Rick Warren and Bernie Siegel
Siegel says this of his ‘spirit guide’ “All I know is that he has been my invaluable companion ever since his first appearance. My life is much easier now, because he does the hard work”.
Rick Warren and Bernie Siegel
In chapter three of The Purpose-Driven Life, Rick Warren suddenly makes reference to someone called
Bernie Siegel, saying
“Hope is as essential to your life as air and water. You need hope to cope. Dr. Bernie Siegel found he could predict which of his cancer patients would go into remission by asking, “Do you want to live to be one hundred?” Those with a deep sense of life purpose answered yes and were the ones most likely to survive. Hope comes from having a purpose.” [Page 31]
So who is Bernie Siegel? Warren Smith, quoting from one of Bernie Siegel’s own books, gives us a great deal of insight….
“In June of 1978, a Connecticut physician named Bernie Siegel attended a workshop that would completely change his life, including the way he practiced medicine. As a result of a spiritual experience in this workshop—a guided visualization— he would eventually become a bestselling author and New Age leader. In his book Love, Medicine & Miracles, he describes this guided visualization:
“In June 1978, my practice of medicine changed as a result of an unexpected experience I had at a teaching seminar. Oncologist O. Carl Simonton and psychologist Stephanie Matthews (then his wife) gave a workshop—Psychological Factors, Stress, and Cancer—at the Elmcrest Institute in Portland, Connecticut….” [Bernie Siegel. Love, Medicine & Miracles (New York: Harper Collins Publishers: HarperPerennial, 1998), Pg. 18.]
“The Simontons taught us how to meditate. At one point they led us in a directed meditation to find and meet an inner guide. I approached this exercise with all the skepticism one expects from a mechanistic doctor. Still, I sat down, closed my eyes, and followed directions. I didn’t believe it would work, but if it did I expected to see Jesus or Moses. Who else would dare appear inside a surgeon’s head? Instead I met George, a bearded, long-haired young man wearing an immaculate flowing white gown and a skullcap. It was an incredible awakening for me, because I hadn’t expected anything to happen….
“George was spontaneous, aware of my feelings, and an excellent adviser. He gave me honest answers, some of which I didn’t like at first….
“All I know is that he has been my invaluable companion ever since his first appearance. My life is much easier now, because he does the hard work. [8]
Siegel also teaches that through continuous “spiritual consciousness” death no longer exists and that he has “received many messages from those who have died,” (p. 220). Siegel concludes with instructions on how to meditate and visualize cosmic-at-oneness energy healing you. He also lists a whole spate of New Age writers and books for suggested reading (pp. 227-239).
Since that initial spiritual encounter, Siegel has become a leading New Age author and spokesperson. Providing “hope” by fusing modern day medicine with New Age teachings and practices, Siegel has introduced New Age concepts into the professional medical community and to cancer patients everywhere. In Friendship with God, Neale Donald Walsch writes that Bernie Siegel was the “first celebrity endorsement” he received for his first book Conversations with God: Book 1. Walsch said that “it helped book buyers, who might have been skittish about a previously unpublished author, see the value of what I had produced.” [9]
Today, Siegel continues to influence countless numbers of people in his role as a New Age leader. In his books and workshops he encourages people to do guided meditations and visualizations—just as he once did—to initiate contact with their own personal spirit guides. Siegel openly endorses the teachings of A Course in Miracles, and currently serves on the Board of Advisors of Jerry Jampolsky’s A Course in Miracles-based Attitudinal Healing Center in Northern California. [10.]
Why would Rick Warren want to introduce his readers (or his son)*—even indirectly—to a New Age leader like Bernie Siegel? SOURCE: Lighthouse Trails

Evoking Answers to Three Essential Questions
1) Who am I?
The University’s Master’s Degree
Programs engage students experientially
in the principles and practices of Spiritual
Psychology. This technology empowers
them to convert their everyday life experi
–
ences into rungs on the ladder of Spiritual
Evolution where the answer to this
question can be discovered. Classes are
conducted in a Soul-Centered educational
environment, pioneered by Drs. Ron
and Mary Hulnick, that acknowledges
Spiritual Reality and begins with the rec
–
ognition that we are not human beings
with a Soul; we are Souls having a human
experience.
2)
Why am I here and
what is my purpose?
As we learn and implement the practical
technology of Spiritual Psychology in our
daily lives, we discover, amazingly, that
what has stood in the way of Spiritual
progression as well as a more fulfilling
life is what we call “unresolved issues”—
negative reactions within each of us
that are triggered by various situations,
circumstances, and people. As we learn
to heal these unresolved issues, we
become clearer and more connected to
our life’s purpose and naturally grow into
enhanced levels of success and fulfillment.
3) How can I make a
meaningful contribution
in the world?
Through participating in the educational
process experienced at USM, students
make a meaningful contribution in their
world in two distinct yet related ways.
First, by healing unresolved issues, we
literally subtract from the sum total of
negativity on the planet and add to the
sum total of positivity. Thus, at USM
we say, “Every time one person resolves
one issue, the whole of humanity moves
forward.” Second, the more we evolve
Spiritually, the more clearly our life’s
purpose reveals itself and the more
empowered we become to make more of
a meaningful contribution in our world.
“These students, I know, are dedicated
to being the answer to the Soul’s only
question, and to being that answer in
the lives of all those whose lives they
touch. And that’s a three-word ques
–
tion, which this University seeks to
answer. Or, better yet, does not seek to
answer but seeks to provide the space
from which the answer might emerge.
And here is the three-word question:
Who am I?”

Thanks James – great info! Elsewhere I’m continuing to find documentation that Rick Warren, Joel Osteen and T.D. Jakes are associating with New Agers in one way or another.
I’m looking for the names of advisors for The Bible TV miniseries. Particularly, I’m wondering how many of the advisors are so-called “evangelicals.” Just by advising Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, they are associating with New Agers.
Here’s a brief list I’ve found:

Very sad that Roma has lost the plot. She is from my home town Derry. She is not married in the Roman Catholic church and has been married a few times so I thought making the film was bringing her home!! After reading this she is a confused person in need of prayer.
There is a lot of bad psychology about but psychology can be used for good too. Although you say Roma came from Bogside area … true …. but it was a private Tutor style house for middleclass people.
It is now fashionable for some to say i lived in Bogside as a badge of honour. Roma was far away from troubles like Phil Coulter. Some rewrite the script. The real heros were ordinary people like mothers/fathers, priests, teachers in the area but not Roma.
Sadly ego, ego and we all gave to watch that.
Good comments, Sandra. Interesting, that Roma Downey is from your home town. Comments such as yours always help readers see the background or “backstory” of how a person such as Downey became so heretical and New Age.
God bless you – Dave
